Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov discussed by phone the implementation of the provisions of the trilateral statement on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement.
"The parties discussed the implementation of the provisions of the statement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia dated November 9 this year, as well as some issues of regional and international agenda," the Russian Foreign Ministry said after a telephone conversation between the parties.
On September 27, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated and active battles started on the disputed territory. Baku and Yerevan have been disputing the region since February 1988, when it announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijani SSR. During the 1992-1994 armed conflict, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts.
On November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on the complete cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the Russian leader, the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides are stopping at their occupied positions, and Russian peacekeepers will be deployed in the region.
