21 November 2019

Today Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will hold talks with Foreign Minister of Malaysia Saifuddin Abdullah. The parties are expected to review in detail the current state of bilateral cooperation and its prospects in various spheres as well as to compare notes on topical international and regional problems, including the developments in the Islamic world and Russia’s cooperation with multilateral Muslim structures.

The Russian side expressed hope that the visit of the Malaysian Foreign Minister to Moscow will contribute to the comprehensive strengthening of bilateral partnership, which fully meets the long-term interests of the two countries, the tasks of ensuring security, stability and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region (APR).

Bilateral relations between Russia and Malaysia are multifaceted and are developing successfully.

Effective cooperation within the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other multilateral organisations and forums is an important factor of Russia-Malaysia ties. Russia and Malaysia cooperate proactively on countering international terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and transnational crime, etc.

In 2018, bilateral trade increased 26.3 percent year-on-year to $2.7 billion.

There are good prospects for expanding cooperation in the energy sector, innovative medicine, laser technology, data protection and biotechnology, etc.
