Russian and Turkish defense ministers discuss settlement of conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed by phone with Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar the situation in the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry reports on Tuesday.


"The heads of defense departments of Russia and Turkey discussed the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and exchanged views on stabilizing the situation in Syria," the Russian military department said.


On November 9 Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on the complete cessation of military operations in Nagorno Karabakh. The Russian leader particularly informed that the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides were stopping at their occupied positions, and Russian peacekeepers would be deployed in the region.


In total, 1,960 servicemen, 90 armored personnel carriers, 380 vehicles and special equipment will be transferred to deploy peacekeepers in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.


According to the Defense Ministry, the contingent will be based in the units of the 15th Independent Motorized Rifle Brigade (peacekeepers) of the Central Military District. According to the agency, to monitor compliance with the cessation of hostilities agreements, Russian observation posts will be set up along the line of contact in Nagorno Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor connecting Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh. The command of the peacekeeping operation will be located in the Stepanakert area.
