Mozambican law enforcement authorities have not reported any information about the Russians among the victims of the militant attack on the town of Palma in the north of the country, the Russian embassy in Mozambique told TASS on Monday.
"In connection with the attack by a group of terrorists on the town of Palma in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, we can report that the local law enforcement agencies controlling the situation have not informed the embassy about Russian citizens among the victims. Our compatriots living in Mozambique have not requested assistance. The Russian diaspora is concentrated in the southern and central regions of the country, far from the source of tension, " the diplomatic mission reported.
The embassy operates in normal mode.
The diplomatic mission noted that in general the situation in this country is stable. "Certain activity of religious extremists in the province of Cabo Delgado, observed since 2017, finds an adequate response from the local security authorities. The attack on the city of Palma is one of the few terrorist sorties in recent months," the embassy informed. - "According to official figures, Mozambique's armed forces and police are completing an operation to restore order in and around the city".
On Sunday, Omar Saranga, a representative of Mozambique's Ministry of Defense, reported dozens of deaths in the terrorist attack on Palma City.
In northern Mozambique, primarily in Cabo Delgado, the radical group al-Shabab and a cell of the terrorist organization Islamic State (banned in Russia) have been operating since 2017. They have set the goal of creating a pseudo-state entity under their control in this part of the country, living under Sharia law.
