Russian Embassy Reports Normalization of Situation in Bangladesh

06 August

The situation in Bangladesh is gradually returning to normal following recent mass protests, according to the Russian embassy in Dhaka. The embassy informed TASS that, as of the morning of August 6, the nationwide curfew has been lifted, and educational and public institutions, private organizations, and factories are reopening. Dhaka International Airport has also resumed operations.

On August 5, large crowds of protesters took to the streets in Dhaka and other major cities, leading to incidents of arson, vandalism, and looting. Protesters targeted the prime minister’s residence, damaged the statue of the country’s founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, set fire to his museum, and broke into the parliament building, the office of the ruling Awami League party, police stations, prisons, and major TV channels.

The violence resulted in more than 100 deaths due to clashes and fires over the past 24 hours. On Monday, the prime minister of Bangladesh resigned and departed the country, leading to a takeover by the military. Plans are underway to dissolve the parliament and establish an interim government.
