Indonesia is expected to make a final decision on joining BRICS after the inauguration of President-elect Prabowo Subianto. The country is considered a strong candidate for membership in the group, according to Ludmila Vorobieva, Director of the Third Asian Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry. She made this statement during a presentation of the analytical note “Maritime Geopolitics of the Pacific and Indian Oceans: A View from Moscow” at the Valdai Discussion Club.
“Our BRICS contacts indicate that Indonesia is a very strong candidate for membership if a consensus decision is reached by the organization's members,” she stated.
Vorobieva also mentioned that Indonesia has not yet formally applied to join BRICS, but Indonesian officials have expressed interest in joining during discussions. “However, we need to wait for President-elect Prabowo Subianto to take office. I believe Indonesia will only make a final decision after that,” Vorobieva added.
The Director of the Third Asian Department emphasized that Moscow is looking forward to Indonesia’s participation in BRICS events in October, which will be held in Kazan.
The Indonesian presidential election took place on February 14, with Prabowo Subianto emerging as the winner. Following his victory, he promised a smooth transition of power and expressed his intention to continue the policies of the current administration. He also indicated that he expects to assume office after his inauguration on October 20.
Russia assumed the BRICS presidency on January 1, and it will continue through the end of the year, featuring more than 250 events on a wide range of topics. The BRICS summit will take place in Kazan from October 22 to 24 and will be the centerpiece of Russia’s presidency in the organization.
