Russian Foreign Ministry Calls UN Palestine Resolution a Step Towards Recognizing Israel's Actions as Illegal

20 September

The adoption of a resolution on Palestine by the UN General Assembly on September 18 has been hailed as an important step toward recognizing the illegality of Israel's actions, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“We believe that the adoption of the current UN General Assembly resolution is an important step toward the international community’s recognition of the illegal nature of Israel’s actions,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.

The ministry emphasized that this will also contribute to broader efforts to develop specific measures aimed at upholding international law, ending the longest occupation in modern history, and achieving a two-state solution in practice.

The Russian Foreign Ministry further urged UN member states and international organizations not to recognize the “facts on the ground” created through Israel's unilateral actions. It also highlighted a significant court ruling that deems Israel's policies a de facto annexation of large parts of Palestinian territory, and a direct violation of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

The ministry also noted that the vote on the resolution occurred amid an unprecedented escalation of violence in the Arab-Israeli conflict zone. “This marks the fourth UN General Assembly decision aimed at protecting the Palestinian people’s fundamental right to self-determination and their legitimate aspirations to establish a sovereign, independent state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” the ministry added.

The statement also expressed regret over the absence of such important decisions from the UN Security Council, which has been blocked by the United States. “As is well known, Washington has used its veto power five times in recent months—often acting alone—to block Security Council resolutions on ceasefires and Palestine's admission to the UN,” the Russian Foreign Ministry concluded.
