Russian MFA calls Iran's admission to SCO key decision of New Delhi summit

Iran's admission to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a full-fledged member will be one of the main decisions following the organization's summit in New Delhi, Tehran has fulfilled its procedural obligations. Russian President's Special Representative for SCO Affairs and Ambassador-at-Large for the Foreign Ministry Bakhtiyor Khakimov said this on Thursday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).


"At the upcoming summit in New Delhi on July 4, which will be held in the format of a video conference, one of the key decisions will be Iran's accession already as a full-fledged member. Iran has completed its mandatory procedures and will join the family of the SCO member states as a result of the New Delhi summit," he said speaking at the session "Integration for Development: Practical Aspects of SCO Business Cooperation."


Khakimov also pointed to another important decision that will be made following the SCO summit. "It will be the signing of a memorandum on Belarus' commitments to become a member state," he said. "The Belarusian side, as this idea is widely accepted within the organization, is doing its utmost to speed up the process," added the diplomat.


Earlier on, the Indian MFA informed that the meeting of the Council of the SCO Heads of State would be held on July 4 in the virtual format. Apart from the SCO participants, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have been invited as observers.
