Moscow considers it important that Israel will suspend the extension of sovereignty to parts of the West Bank after the agreement with the UAE, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
The Foreign Ministry noted that the Russian side "carefully" read the joint statement of US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme commander of the UAE Armed forces bin Zayed al Nahyan, which recorded an agreement on the full normalization of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
In this regard, the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that "at all stages of work on the Middle East settlement", Moscow, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a co-sponsor of the peace process and a member of the "Quartet" of international mediators, has always proceeded from the need to achieve a comprehensive Middle East settlement. A key component of the settlement should be a just and sustainable solution to the Palestinian problem based on the international legal framework approved by the UN, including Security Council resolutions, the Arab peace initiative and the fundamental principle of "two states", according to which Israel and Palestine will coexist peacefully within internationally recognized borders.
"In this regard, we have drawn attention to the fact that in accordance with the aforementioned tripartite Declaration, Israel will suspend the extension of its sovereignty to parts of the occupied West Bank. We consider this an important element, since such plans were a key obstacle to the resumption of direct Palestinian-Israeli contacts. Their implementation would lead to the dismantling of the prospects for creating a viable, integral, territorially continuous Palestinian state, " the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The statement contains provisions that the parties will continue their efforts to achieve a just, comprehensive and sustainable settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. We remind you again that the mentioned international legal framework for the settlement should remain the basis for it, despite the existence of a number of unilateral initiatives," the Ministry added.
