Moscow strongly condemns the activities of terrorists in Mali, as they have the potential to escalate tensions throughout the entire Sahara-Sahel region. This statement was made by Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, in response to recent terrorist attacks in Mali.
The diplomat expressed shock "at the new crimes committed by Islamist extremists against the peaceful population of Mali." "Such criminal acts could exacerbate the situation, not only in Mali but also across the entire Sahara-Sahel region, which is currently facing significant challenges in its historical development. We strongly condemn the violent activities of terrorists," Zakharova stressed.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that according to incoming information, the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 7 in Mali resulted in the tragic loss of 49 civilians and 15 servicemen. One of the attacks targeted a passenger ship on the Niger River, but thanks to the swift response of the Malian military, further casualties were prevented.
The diplomatic department stressed that "these terrorist attacks were an attempt by destructive forces to undermine the efforts of Mali's transitional government to establish peace and ensure national security." "We convey our heartfelt condolences to the leadership and people of Mali. Reiterating our unwavering support for Bamako's commitment to strengthening security and stability in the friendly Republic of Mali, we pledge to continue providing the necessary assistance and aid," the Russian Foreign Ministry concluded.
