Russian MFA: Russia will support Central Asian countries in their fight against terrorism

18 October 2022

Central Asian countries can count on Russia's support in combating terrorism. The statement was made by Vladimir Tarabrin, Director of the Department on New Challenges and Threats of the Russian Foreign Ministry, speaking at a high-level conference on international and regional cooperation in the fight against terrorism, which is taking place in Dushanbe on Tuesday.

"Central Asian states can surely count on the full assistance and support of the Russian Federation in the fight against terrorism," Tarabrin assured. He drew attention to Russia-backed Counterterrorism Directorate (CTU) projects to implement the UN's global counterterrorism strategy in Central Asia and to counter the weaponizations of terrorists in the region. The Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that the September 2022 terrorist attack on the Russian embassy in Kabul once again confirmed the importance of joining forces in the fight against terrorism, including in the Central Asian region.

The conference in Dushanbe was co-organised by the UN Office for Counter-Terrorism, the government of Tajikistan, the Regional centre for preventive diplomacy for Central Asia, the OSCE and the EU.

It is expected to bring together ministers, representatives of UN member states, UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy structures, international and regional organizations, civil society institutions and border security experts. The conference is expected to result in the adoption of the Dushanbe Declaration on border security and management to combat terrorism and prevent the movement of terrorists.
