The Russian Federation is ready to mediate between Syria and Turkey and provide a platform for talks between the leaders of the two countries. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said this in an interview with RT Arabic, a video fragment of which was published on Monday.
"I am convinced that a serious and clear approach is needed in holding this kind of meetings, so that this meeting does not have only a formal character, so that positive results are achieved at its results, which are necessary both for Syria and Turkey, and for the region as a whole. As for us, we welcome this step. <...> We are always ready to go to meet both our Syrian friends and our Turkish partners. And if they see such a need or benefit in our mediation or providing a Russian platform for such meetings, we are always ready," he said.
According to him, holding such a meeting depends on the political will of the leadership of the two countries.
Turkish media reported after talks between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi on August 5 that Ankara has been discussing the possibility of direct contacts between the Turkish and Syrian leaders. The Turkish authorities stated in this connection that such negotiations are not planned yet.
