Russian peacekeeper injured in a mine explosion in Nagorno-Karabakh

An officer of the Russian peacekeeping forces was wounded in a mine explosion in Nagorno-Karabakh while searching for the dead, an officer of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces was killed as a result of the explosion of ammunition, and four representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic were wounded, the Russian Ministry of Defense reports.


According to the ministry, on November 23, a  joint group for exchange of bodies of dead servicemen consisting of representatives of RF peacekeepers, armed forces of Azerbaijan, Ministry of Emergency Situations of unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and International Committee of Red Cross searched for the dead in Tartar district.


"A mine exploded near the village of Madagiz while carrying out work. As a result of the explosion, an officer of the Russian peacekeeping contingent was wounded. One officer of the Armed Forces of the Azerbaijan Republic was killed. Another four employees of the Nagorno-Karabakh Ministry of Emergency Situations were injured to varying degrees," the Defense Ministry said. "The Russian serviceman was taken to a hospital in Baku, where he is provided with necessary medical care. There is no life threat," the ministry added.


According to the Defense Ministry, joint search and transfer teams created at the initiative of the Russian peacekeepers' command have been working harmoniously and efficiently for over a week now. All bodies found as a result of their work are handed over to the parties for burial.

 

On November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on the complete cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the Russian leader, the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides stop at occupied positions and Russian peacekeepers are deployed in the region.


According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the contingent was formed by units of the 15th Independent Motorized Rifle Brigade (peacekeepers) of the Central Military District. Russian observation posts are located along the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor connecting Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The command of the peacekeeping operation is located in Stepanakert. The situation is monitored 24 hours a day.
