Russian Representative Advocates for UNSC Visit to Middle East to Promote De-escalation

14 August

Dmitriy Polyanskiy, Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, has called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to visit the Middle East, specifically the area of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, if it could aid in de-escalating the situation.

"We urge the Council not to follow Washington’s approach, which is primarily focused on protecting Israel’s interests and benefiting from arms supplies to conflict zones," Polyanskiy stated during a UNSC meeting. "Instead, the Council should collectively explore measures to de-escalate the situation in Gaza and the broader region. If this requires a field visit by the Security Council, it should be pursued."

Polyanskiy criticized the current approach, noting, "We find ourselves in a peculiar situation where we expect the relevant Secretariat divisions to maintain an active presence in the conflict zone and perform their duties under challenging conditions, while we, in New York, rely solely on reports and open-source information."

He stressed that "the Middle East should be a priority for Security Council visits, and these visits should not become mere political tourism in more comfortable locations."
