Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Defense Ministry to sign a Protocol to the agreement with Syria on the deployment of the air group of the Russian armed forces, providing for the transfer of additional real estate and water area to the Russian side.

The corresponding order of the head of state, as TASS writes, is published on the portal of normative documents.

The Russian Defense Ministry was instructed to negotiate with the Syrian side together with the Russian Foreign Ministry and, upon reaching an agreement, sign the Protocol on behalf of the Russian Federation, allowing changes to its draft that do not have a fundamental character, with the approval of the Russian government.

Russia and Syria signed an agreement for 49 years on the deployment of the air group of the Russian air force at the Khmeimim airfield. According to the document, the Syrian side transfers the plot at the airfield and the real estate objects located on it to the Russian side for free use.

The agreement is valid for a period of 49 years and is automatically extended for subsequent 25-year periods unless either party notifies the other party in writing through diplomatic channels of its intention to terminate it at least one year before the expiration of the next period.
