Russia's Permanent Representative to Vienna: negotiations on nuclear deal enter final straight

07 February 2022

Vienna talks on restoring the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran's nuclear program enter the final straight, Mikhail Ulyanov, who heads the Russian delegation at the Vienna talks, said on Monday.

"The Vienna talks on the JCPOA will resume tomorrow. They seem to enter the final straight. This requires additional efforts and political will from all participants in the interests of a full restoration of the nuclear deal, including the lifting of US unilateral sanctions against Iran," Ulyanov wrote on Twitter.

On January 3, the eighth round of talks resumed in Vienna after a New Year's break to restore the JCPOA to its original form and bring the US back into the multilateral agreement. The work is being conducted in the format of the participants of the Joint Commission of Iran and the "Five" (Russia, Britain, Germany, China and France) and their separate consultations with the United States without the participation of Iran, which is not yet ready for direct talks with the US side. The negotiators have already agreed to accelerate the process of working on the draft agreement. As it is assumed, the eighth round may be the last, the negotiators are determined to try to finish the work in February 2022.
