Sergey Lavrov called the US pressure on Iran a flagrant violation of the UN Charter

By unprecedented pressure on Iran, the United States is flagrantly violating the Charter of the United Nations, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov said in The Great Game (Bolshaya Igra) show on Channel One.

"It is impossible to treat Iran as Washington is trying to do. Not just grossly violating the UN Charter, refusing to comply with the resolution adopted by the UN Security Council and having a binding character, but also quite rudely addressing the requirements of the Islamic Republic of Iran-a country with a thousand-year civilization, traditions and with a great sense of dignity," the Russian Foreign Minister said.

The United States, according to Lavrov, "in fact, said that they would not comply with this resolution, but Iran must do".

"This is nonsense. I understand that the United States does not always have enough specialists in the Middle East. But this is obvious. There is no need to sit for years at Harvard and study history, " the Minister stressed.

In 2015, the UN Security Council adopted 2231 resolution approving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran and confirmed that the signing of the document marked a fundamental shift in the consideration of the Iranian nuclear issue. The agreement called for the lifting of sanctions in exchange for limiting Iran's nuclear program.

The United States, however, unilaterally announced in 2018 that the country would withdraw from the deal and reinstate all pre-signed sanctions against Iran.
