The staff of the US consulate general in Saudi Jeddah were not injured in a shooting near the diplomatic mission, the security guard of the building and the gunman were killed, the state department said.
"We can confirm reports of a shooting incident outside the consulate general in Jeddah. Two people were killed: a local consulate security guard and the gunman, who was killed by security forces," the department said in a statement quoted by RIA Novosti.
As the state department notes, the building was blocked and "Americans were not injured in the attack."
Earlier, a spokesman for the Saudi province of Mecca said that on Wednesday evening, "a person in a car stopped near the US consulate in Jeddah governorate, and got out of it carrying a firearm in his hand." "Security forces had to open fire, and he was killed in the exchange of fire. The guard of the consulate from Nepal was wounded during the shooting and later died," he reported.
