Syria's Permanent Representative to UN says country supports aid delivery by any means

14 February 2023

Damascus supports the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria by any means, including across the border, without additional conditions. Syrian Permanent Representative to the UN Bassam al-Sabbagh told reporters on Monday.

"Syria supports the delivery of humanitarian aid to this area (north-west of the country - TASS) within three months through any checkpoints both from inside the country and across the border," the Syrian representative pointed out, noting that there were no preconditions for Damascus' decision. Al-Sabbagh explained that the decision of the country's authorities to open additional humanitarian crossings across the border with Turkey to the earthquake-affected areas did not require the additional enshrinement of a UN Security Council resolution.

"There is no need for a resolution. This is the decision of our government, our sovereign decision. It is an agreement between Syria and the UN," he added.
