Tajikistan's Permanent and Plenipotentiary Representative to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Khasan Sultonov called on members of the association to assist in protecting the border with Afghanistan within the framework of the relevant existing agreement.
"Tajikistan, as the country with the longest border with Afghanistan, is taking necessary measures to contain the situation and counter threats and challenges emanating from that country. But given the situation in the region and the fact that some parts of the border with Afghanistan are in inaccessible mountainous terrain, it is difficult to cope with this task alone," said a representative at a meeting of the CSTO Permanent Council on the Tajik-Afghan border, the text of which is published on the organization's website.
According to him, "these circumstances require us to respond adequately within the CSTO, including measures to strengthen the capacity of the southern borders".
"In this context, the need to ensure the implementation of the decision of the Collective Security Council (CSC) of September 23, 2013 "On providing assistance to the Republic of Tajikistan in strengthening the Tajik-Afghan border" remains relevant. Therefore, we would like to call on the member states of the organization to do their part in the full implementation of this document," Sultonov said.
