Tajikistan Increases Oil Product Imports, with Majority from Russia

07 February

Tajikistan saw an 11.6% increase in oil product imports in 2023, totaling 1.413 million tons valued at $892 million, according to Safarali Kurbonzoda, first deputy head of the republic's Antimonopoly Service. This marked a rise of 164.2 thousand tons compared to 2022 figures, with Russia accounting for 63.3% of the purchases.

Kurbonzoda noted that Kazakhstan supplied 25.9% of the oil products, followed by Uzbekistan at 7.4%, Turkmenistan at 2%, Belarus at 0.7%, and 0.7% from other countries. The imports included 348,000 tons of gasoline, with an average price of $655 per ton, reflecting a 20% increase in purchase price over the year.

Fuel prices surged domestically throughout 2023, prompting reports of price hikes in gasoline, diesel, and gas. In October 2023, Khujand suspended city bus services due to a sharp diesel price increase. The Antimonopoly Service attributed this to price instability in exporting nations.

As of February 2024, gasoline prices at network gas stations in Dushanbe stand at approximately 10 somoni (82.8) per liter, diesel at 11.6 (96.1) somoni, and gas for cars at 6.6 (54.7) somoni.
