Afghanistan is deeply grateful to Russia for its willingness to cooperate and provide support, said General Sayed Abdul Basir Saberi, head of the Defense Ministry's logistics department in the Taliban government (the Taliban movement is banned in Russia and recognized as a terrorist organization). In an interview with TASS, Saberi expressed appreciation for Russia's assistance and its engagement with Afghanistan.
"Russia has almost recognized us. It has helped Afghanistan many times, invited us to conferences on resolving the situation in our country, and continues to assist us. We are very grateful for that," the general stated.
Saberi emphasized that Afghanistan remains open to communication with all nations. "If someone approaches us with hostile intentions, we will respond accordingly. But if they come with goodwill, we will reciprocate in kind. We have always favored diplomatic relations. We will not allow anyone to violate our interests, but we also desire to live in peace," he added.
On July 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin, responding to journalists' questions after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana, expressed Moscow's support for resuming the SCO-Afghanistan contact group. He noted that this initiative would contribute to the normalization of the situation in Afghanistan. Putin also mentioned that while Russia is in contact with the Taliban, the timing of possible recognition and full membership in the SCO depends on the evolving situation.
