Tehran and Baku to Hold Discussions on Reopening an Embassy in Iran

02 October 2023

Iran and Azerbaijan are planning to hold discussions in the near future regarding the reinstatement of Azerbaijan's diplomatic mission in Tehran. The mission had been suspended on January 29 following an attack. This statement was issued by Naser Kanani, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

"The plans for the visit of Azerbaijani officials to Iran are currently in the coordination stage, and I am unable to provide an exact date at this time. However, I can assure you that we have significant matters on our agenda, including the reopening of the Azerbaijani embassy and developments in the South Caucasus," -  Fars News Agency quoted him as saying. -  "The return of Azerbaijani diplomats to Tehran would be a positive development, and we are hopeful that we will witness this in the near future."

Relations between Baku and Tehran soured after an armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran in January 2023. The attack resulted in the death of the chief of security at the diplomatic mission and injuries to two of his colleagues. In response to the incident, the Azerbaijani Embassy suspended its diplomatic activities, and most of its staff and their families were evacuated to Azerbaijan. Only a small security team remained at the diplomatic mission to safeguard the administrative building and embassy property but did not engage in diplomatic functions.

Recently, Azerbaijani state TV channel AzTV reported that the perpetrator of the armed attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran had been sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Iran. As of now, Tehran has not officially commented on this information.
