The UN Security Council adopted a new resolution against the financing of terrorism

29 March 2019

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a new resolution 2462 on countering the financing of terrorism.

The document, as Vladimir Voronkov, the head of the organization’s counter-terrorism directorate, said earlier, was drafted by France together with other countries, including Russia.

It states, in particular, that all states “must ensure that their domestic laws and regulations sufficiently provide for serious criminal responsibility, allowing for prosecution and punishment appropriately reflecting the seriousness of the offense”.

It also stresses out that the UN Security Council “encourages Member States to conduct financial investigation into cases related to obtaining evidence for convictions in terrorist financing cases”, as well as “actively use and update the sanctions list against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) and “Al-Qaida” (both groups are prohibited in Russia) and consider the possibility of including people and organizations involved in the financing of the terrorism”.
