The Syrian crisis is far from over. For 8 years of bloody conflict, millions of citizens of Syria have learned what poverty and hunger are, said David Beasley, Executive Director of the UN World Food Program, RIA Novosti reports.

According to him, the conflict in Syria has led to the situation when 6.2 million local residents have moved inside the country. However, many of them returned to their homes, often lying in ruins, but most of them have lost property and work.

“Those who return home after fleeing from conflict zones face incredible difficulties at the beginning of new life,” the head of the largest humanitarian organization noted.

According to Beasley, by last March, the UN World Food Program has helped approximately 3.4 million Syrian refugees in neighboring countries.

Beasley stressed the significant contribution of Russia, which  allocated $ 26.5 million to WFP for food aid operations in the SAR from 2012 to 2019.

“The Syrian crisis is far from over”, he said on the eve of his departure for the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. “After 8 years of conflict, hunger and poverty accompany millions of Syrians.”
