Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has said that the unrest in Kazakhstan was an attempted coup d'etat.
He said that preparations for the unrest in Kazakhstan had been going on for a long time. According to him, the wave of mass unrest in Kazakhstan arose "as if on a single command".
The leader of the republic said that the gangs in Kazakhstan were trying to get hold of weapons and military equipment. He also noted that 16 security officers were killed in Kazakhstan, the number of civilian victims is being specified. In addition, he said terrorists were directly involved in the unrest in Kazakhstan, including foreign fighters. Terrorists in Kazakhstan have acted with extreme cruelty, with two soldiers having their heads cut off. Kazakhstan will later provide the world with evidence of the terrorist aggression, Tokayev said.
Constitutional order has been restored in Kazakhstan, he said. Tokayev said he will submit proposals for a new government on January 11.
Tokayev said that the crisis in January was the largest in the history of the country's independence. "In a few days in January, Kazakhstan experienced a major crisis. It was the worst in the entire thirty-year history of independence," Tokayev said. According to him, political demands in Kazakhstan were heard and met.
Tokayev said all CSTO countries have presented a united front to help Kazakhstan, the CSTO has shown its relevance and effectiveness, and the mission of the CSTO peacekeeping contingent in Kazakhstan has become useful. The arrival of CSTO forces helped recapture Almaty from terrorists, the Kazakhstani leader said. During the CSTO meeting, Tokayev suggested optimizing the timing of the response to crisis situations.
Tokayev thanked Russian leader Vladimir Putin for the quick decision to send a CSTO peacekeeping contingent to the republic. "I would like to express special words of gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin for showing understanding and quickly resolving the issue of sending a CSTO peacekeeping contingent to Kazakhstan. Vladimir Vladimirovich, we have been in constant communication with you since the first days of the terrorist attack on our country," Tokayev said.
He also thanked Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for his prompt work in coordinating the necessary documents.
