President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a meeting with Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Imangali Tasmagambetov, highlighting the critical need to counter terrorism, as well as the illicit trafficking of weapons and drugs. The press service of Kazakhstan’s leader reported on the discussions and the importance of the CSTO’s role in addressing these issues.
"At the meeting, the issues of implementation of key tasks of the organization during the presidency of Kazakhstan were discussed. The head of state noted that the CSTO is important to focus on the statutory areas of work, which are the most relevant and in demand for all member states. Special attention, in his opinion, should be paid to countering such challenges and threats as terrorism, drug and weapons trafficking, and crimes in the information sphere," the statement read.
President Tokayev also emphasized the significance of establishing constructive cooperation with other international structures to bolster regional security.
In response, Secretary-General Tasmagambetov briefed President Tokayev on the progress of the measures adopted at Kazakhstan's initiative to implement the decisions from the November session of the CSTO Collective Security Council. "The issues of preparation for the next session of the Collective Security Council and the upcoming CSTO exercises to be held on the territory of our country were also considered," the press service added.
Tasmagambetov, serving as the CSTO Secretary General since January 2023, has held various prominent roles in Kazakhstan, including deputy prime minister, defense minister, and head of the administrations of Astana and Almaty. He is recognized as a significant political figure in Kazakhstan.
