Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine will be ready for widespread use after toxicological studies are completed, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced this on Thursday.

"We have been closely monitoring the process of developing a vaccine called Sputnik V. The first negotiations for the delivery of Sputnik V have been initiated. This vaccine will be suitable for widespread use once the testing process is completed, which is needed to ensure its suitability," he stressed in a released statement.

Fahrettin Koca announced the start of toxicological tests of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V on February 25.

In addition, the head of the Turkish Ministry of Health said that Ankara expects to receive about 100 million more doses of vaccines against coronavirus by the end of May. So far, according to Koca, more than 14 million people in the country have been vaccinated.

On January 23, a representative of the RDIF told TASS that it had reached agreements with a leading Turkish pharmaceutical manufacturer to produce the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine in Turkey. According to the representative, the process of technology transfer has begun.

Russia was the first in the world to register a coronavirus vaccine called Sputnik V on August 11, 2020. Its 91.6% efficacy was confirmed by the publication of data in The Lancet, a leading medical journal. Sputnik V is one of the world's top three coronavirus vaccines in terms of the number of approvals received by government regulators. To date, Sputnik V has been registered in more than 50 countries with a total population of over 1.3 billion people.
