UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed regret over the ongoing escalation in the Gaza Strip. However, he also expressed hope that the temporary halt in hostilities between the Jewish state and the Palestinian Hamas movement could be reinstated.
"I deeply regret the resumption of hostilities in Gaza. I remain hopeful that it will be possible to extend the pause that was established earlier," expressed the head of the world organization in a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Guterres also highlighted the significance of ensuring an actual ceasefire for humanitarian purposes amid the resumption of hostilities.
The UN secretary-general is currently in Dubai to attend the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
On the morning of December 1, the Israel Defense Forces accused the Palestinian Hamas movement of violating the truce and announced the resumption of fighting in the Gaza Strip.
