Uzbekistan Passes Law Banning Deputies and Senators from Holding Foreign Residency

05 July

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed amendments to the legislation, passed by the Legislative Chamber and approved by the Senate, that prohibit members of parliament and senators from holding their positions if they possess  permanent residency in a foreign country. The document, effective upon publication, is available on the national legislation database website Lex.uz.

"A deputy or senator’s powers will be terminated prematurely if they obtain permanent residency or any other document confirming the right to reside permanently in a foreign country," the document states.

Additionally, under the new amendments, deputies and senators will lose their mandate if they fail to participate, without a valid reason, in the activities of their respective chamber, political party faction, committee, or commission for 30 days.
