Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin discussed by phone with the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen the progress of the political process in Syria and preparations for the upcoming meeting of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Vershinin and Pedersen had a telephone conversation on July 16.
"The interlocutors discussed in detail the entire range of issues related to the promotion of the political process led and implemented by the Syrians themselves with the support of the UN in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2254, including preparations for the upcoming meeting of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva," the Ministry said.
The first meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee was held in Geneva on October 30 in an expanded format. After that, a small format started working.
Earlier in June, Pedersen said that a meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee could be held in Geneva at the end of August, and then be convened on a permanent basis until the end of the year.
