Vladimir Putin held an urgent meeting of the Russian Security Council due to the escalation in Idlib

Russian President Vladimir Putin held an urgent meeting with members of the country's Security Council in connection with the escalation of the situation in Idlib, Syria. According to the Press Secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov, the discussion was attended by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov, Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu, SVR head Sergey Naryshkin, etc.


"During the meeting, topical issues of the domestic agenda were discussed. There was also a detailed conversation about the situation around the Syrian Idlib, extreme concern was expressed in connection with the  escalation of the situation in this area of Syria, provoked by terrorist groups that have intensified offensive actions against the Syrian army," Peskov told reporters.


The situation in Idlib escalated after the terrorists' a large-scale offensive on the positions of the Syrian government troops on February 27. The SAR army returned fire, and as a result, the Turkish military were injured, who, as stated in the Russian Defense Ministry, "should not have been there".


A total of 33 Turkish soldiers were killed. The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that immediately after receiving information about the victims of the Turkish military, measures for a complete ceasefire by Syrian troops were taken, and the safe evacuation of killed and wounded Turkish soldiers to the territory of Turkey was provided.
