WHO: vaccination against the coronavirus will not begin until 2021

23 July 2020

Coronavirus vaccine will not be used until 2021, despite good test results. This statement was made on Wednesday by Michael Ryan, Director of WHO's Health Emergencies Program.

"In realistic terms, next year will come by the time people start getting vaccinated," Ryan said.

He noted that some potential medicines had reached the third phase of the trial, which involves human testing, and all of them are showing good results. "But the safety and efficacy of the vaccines must be ensured. It will take some time," the expert explained, stressing the need for access to vaccines for all people regardless of income level.

The outbreak of the new coronavirus disease was recorded in late 2019 in Central China, spread to most countries and was declared a pandemic by the WHO on 11 March. According to the organization's latest data, more than 14.9 million people worldwide were infected and over 616 000 died.
