Zakharova: Russia makes efforts for de-escalation on Armenia and Azerbaijan border

29 September 2022

Russia continues to make vigorous efforts to normalize the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday.

"Our country continues vigorous efforts to de-escalate the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in contacts with both Baku and Yerevan," she said.

Zakharova reminded that relevant steps are also undertaken by the CSTO, and stressed that it is necessary to ensure sustainable ceasefire and withdrawal of all forces to their previous positions.

The diplomat drew attention to attempts of a number of extra-regional players to bring instability to the South Caucasus or "transfer the situation of instability in Ukraine to another part of the post-Soviet space." "Now we see a tendency where they are trying to simply put sticks in the wheels of the implementation of these agreements," she said. - "We continue to believe that the key to stability in the South Caucasus is the full implementation of all provisions of the trilateral statements of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia on November 9, 2020, January 11 and November 26, 2021. We consider it important in the current circumstances to intensify work on all tracks, including the unblocking of economic and transport ties in the region, border delimitation and the agreement of a peace treaty.
