Russia is concerned about the growing activity of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS, banned in Russian Federation) in Afghanistan, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday.
"We are concerned about the growing activity of the ISIS terrorist group in Afghanistan," she said.
Zakharova stressed that Moscow notes with particular concern the activities of IS in the area of the Russian embassy in Kabul, where five militants were liquidated on October 4. "We call on the Afghan authorities to take additional measures to ensure the security of the Russian diplomatic mission as well as Russian citizens in the territory of Afghanistan," the diplomat said.
The Russian foreign ministry representative pointed out that the recent terrorist attack by IS near a mosque in Kabul killed 20 people and wounded more than 30. "The group has intensified combat operations in the south of the country, particularly in Zabul province," Zakharova added.
