Zakharova: the crisis in Libya can turn into a disaster

29 May 2020

Moscow insists that there is no military solution to the crisis in Libya, and prolonging the crisis in the country threatens disastrous consequences, Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said today, speaking at an online conference of the Moscow diplomatic club. At the same time, she noted that the situation in Libya continues to deteriorate, the truce is totally broken.

"The Russian side will continue to focus on the lack of prospects and effectiveness of a military solution, the lack of alternatives to a political settlement, and the need for strict compliance with the decisions on the Libyan problem that were taken," the diplomat said.

"We are convinced that further prolongation of the current crisis, which we characterize as a systemic crisis, threatens Libya and its long-suffering people with disastrous consequences," Zakharova said, stressing that the international community should make every effort to help Libyans overcome this situation.

"This is not just a difficult situation in Libya, we note that it continues to deteriorate.  It is the degradation of the military and political situation in Libya, and the truce announced in January of this year has been totally broken down.  The fighting has resumed in full, as you know very well.  At the same time, the situation on the ground today is significantly different from what it was at the time of the cessation of hostilities.  Thanks to massive external assistance, the balance of power has changed", - Zakharova said.
