Zakharova Warns That US Actions in Syria Could Revive "Islamic State"

05 September 2023

The situation instigated by the United States in Syria has the potential to facilitate the resurgence of the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS, banned in Russia), Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry,  told a  briefing.

"The situation instigated by the United States, which restricts the legitimate authorities of Syria from exercising their constitutional powers over a substantial portion of the country's territory, has the potential to fuel the resurgence of this terrorist organization," she stated.

Zakharova stressed that "despite their considerable military, political, and financial resources, the Americans have struggled to effectively address the complex issue of interethnic relations." "Their usual approach involves force and extreme political measures that often defy international law and diplomacy. The result of this approach is the recent escalation of intense clashes between Kurdish militias and Arab tribal forces," the diplomat noted.

"In any case, we are talking about armed formations illegal from the point of view of the Syrian Constitution, and they are provided with weapons and logistical assistance by the United States of America," Zakharova concluded.
