Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergei Ryzhikov, Sergei Kud-Sverchkov, Oleg Novitsky and Pyotr Dubrov, who are aboard the International Space Station (ISS), congratulated everyone on the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's flight into space.
Station Commander Ryzhikov welcomed everyone aboard the ISS and congratulated them on Cosmonautics Day, which the world celebrates on April 12.
"Friends, on this day we want to congratulate everyone on this holiday and anniversary. We say thank you to all who have dedicated their lives to the study of the universe. We thank everyone who has worked and continues to work, advancing humanity further and further in the study of space," Dubrov said in a video released by Roscosmos on Monday.
For his part, Kud-Sverchkov recalled that Gagarin's April 12, 1961, flight into space was a turning point in world history. "The man who dared to make this flight, Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, is our compatriot. On that day the entire planet knew his name, because that was when a new history began - the history of manned space flights," said the cosmonaut.
Soviet scientists and designers, Novitsky noted, demonstrated the undeniable superiority of domestic technology. "The legendary 108 minutes of Gagarin's flight became an example of heroism for his followers, including us," he stressed.
On April 12, the world celebrates Cosmonautics Day. In 2021, Vostok will mark 60 years since the Vostok 1 rocket was launched into orbit with Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin aboard. He was the first man to go into space. Vostok 1 made one rotation around the Earth and the same day Yuri Gagarin returned to Earth. He ejected from the descent vehicle of the spacecraft and landed by parachute near the village of Smelovka, Saratov region.
