A humanitarian cargo for evacuees from the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DNR and LNR) was sent on Tuesday from Adygea's republican center, Maikop, to Rostov-on-Don, the republic's head press service said. Cars of the regional branch of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia with humanitarian aid left at 05:00 Moscow time, the press service of the agency specified.

"On the instructions of the head of Adygea Murat Kumpilov, a humanitarian cargo was formed in the republic for the evacuees from Lugansk and Donetsk. The republic has collected more than 12 tons of food, household chemicals and essentials," the press service said.

The situation at the line of contact in the east of Ukraine escalated on February 17. The DNR and LNR reported the most active shelling by Ukraine in recent months. They resulted in damage to a number of civilian infrastructure facilities. On February 18, Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin, heads of the LNR and DNR, announced the evacuation of residents of the republics to Russia due to the growing threat of hostilities, and general mobilization was announced in the republics.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting of the Russian Security Council on Monday, whose members spoke in favor of recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics. Later, Putin declared his recognition of the sovereignty of the DNR and LNR. Treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance were signed with their leaders.
