Member of Basayev and Khattab gang to stand trial for attack on servicemen in Chechnya

A member of an illegal armed group under the leadership of Shamil Basayev and Emir Khattab who took part in the attack on servicemen in Chechnya and OMON (special police troops) of the Perm region will go on trial. The press service of the Russian Investigative Committee reported this on Wednesday.

 

"The investigation of the criminal case against Khafiz Razzakov, a member of the criminal community, has been completed. He is accused of committing crimes under Art. 279 and 317 of the Criminal Code "Participation in an armed insurrection, attempt on the life of law enforcement officers and military personnel. The investigation collected a sufficient amount of evidence, and therefore the criminal case against Razzakov was sent to court to be considered on the merits," reads the report.


According to the investigation, Razzakov, as a member of a criminal group of at least 100 people under the command of Basayev and Khattab, took part in an armed insurgency in the mountainous and wooded area south of the village of Dzhani Vedeno, Vedeno district, Chechen Republic, on March 29, 2000. He is also accused of an armed attack on members of a combined OMON detachment of the Perm region's Main Directorate of Internal Affairs and soldiers of the commandant's office of the Vedeno district of the Chechen Republic. "As a result of the attack, 43 law enforcement officers and servicemen were killed, wounds of varying degrees of severity and moral harm were inflicted on 102 victims. After the attack, members of the criminal group stole firearms, including 36 Kalashnikovs, 13 machine guns, three sniper rifles, an AGS grenade launcher and ammunition, assigned to OMON troops and servicemen," the press service added.

 

The agency noted that it was possible to establish the circumstances of the crimes and bring the persons involved in criminal responsibility in cooperation with the units of the Federal Security Service of Russia.
