Russia marks the Day of Memory and Sorrow

The Day of Memory and Sorrow is celebrated in Russia on June 22, exactly 79 years ago with the attack of Nazi Germany on the Soviet Union the Great Patriotic War began. Earlier, on this occasion, the Defense Ministry opened a special portal on its website, where it posted declassified documents relating to the first days of the war.


"Then, overnight, calamities fell on our country, which resulted in the death of millions of our compatriots, as well as the destruction of thousands of towns and villages. For those who survived that war, for children and grandchildren of the Red Army soldiers who fought for the peace in which we live today, this day is the Day of Memory and Sorrow,"  the Department of Information and Mass Communications of the military department said.


The Defense Ministry posted reports of the General Staff, ciphers, as well as memories of the first battles. In the section, you can find out how many divisions Hitlerites had concentrated near the borders of the USSR by the beginning of the war, get acquainted with the front reports, codeograms, as well as memories of participants of the first battles and records of their diaries.


The main event of the Day of Memory and Sorrow will be the All-Russian minute of silence. It will be held simultaneously in all regions of Russia at 12:15 Moscow time. This is the exact time of the airing of the appeal of the People's Commissar of Foreign Affairs of the USSR Vyacheslav Molotov to the Soviet citizens, in which he reported on the attack of Germany on the Soviet Union.


One of the key events is the "Candle of Memory" campaign. It is traditionally held on the night of June 21-22. This year it is held with a limited number of participants - in particular, representatives of the movement "Volunteers of Victory", "Young Guard of "United Russia" and other organizations. "In memory of those who died at the memorials and monuments dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, the candles will be lighten up," the "Victory Volunteers" movement reported TASS.
