Russia registers test to detect British SARS-CoV-2 strain

15 February 2021

The Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor has developed the world's first test system to detect the "British" strain of coronavirus. This is reported on the website of the department.

It has been registered. It is claimed that tests on clinical samples with a confirmed mutation have proved high accuracy of such tests.

The new technology, as noted in Rospotrebnadzor, makes it possible to create reagents to detect any mutations of coronavirus, as well as other infections requiring mass testing.

In mid-December 2020, it became known that a new mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus appeared in the UK. British authorities later reported that it was spreading faster and required the public to observe quarantine measures more strictly.

Scientists found no evidence that the new strain is more lethal or more likely to cause a severe course of the disease. Nevertheless, a number of countries, including Russia, have suspended air links with the United Kingdom.

Rospotrebnadzor head Anna Popova said that Russian vaccines would be effective against the new COVID-19 strain.
