Russian armed forces used the TOS-2 flamethrower system at the Caucasus-2020 (VIDEO)

25 September 2020

The Russian military for the first time used the latest heavy flamethrower system TOS-2 "Tosochka" during the main stage of the strategic exercise Caucasus-2020 at the Kapustin Yar training center in Astrakhan Region. Russian President Vladimir Putin observes the actions of the troops at the training ground.

The new systems destroyed the advancing columns of armored vehicles of the imaginary enemy. "The fire of unguided rockets in the TBS-M3 thermobaric equipment, which have increased energy characteristics, caused significant damage to the advancing enemy," the Russian Defense Ministry told reporters on Friday.

In addition, the combined flamethrower battalion of the southern military district, consisting of nine combat vehicles of the heavy flamethrower system TOS-1A "Solntsepek", destroyed a motorized infantry battalion of the simulated enemy. Unguided rockets in thermobaric and smoke-burning equipment were used to destroy targets.

TOS-2 "Tosochka" is the successor of the heavy flamethrower system TOS-1A "Solntsepek" with improved tactical and technical characteristics. Unlike its predecessor, it is made on the basis of the Ural car with increased load capacity and cross-country ability. It has an increased launch range of unguided rockets. Aiming, shooting and fire control of the TOS-2 are fully automated. A crane is mounted on the machine, so the system does not need a transport and charging machine. In addition, the TOS-2 has a system of electronic protection against high-precision weapons.

The strategic headquarters exercise Caucasus-2020 is taking place on September 21–26 at the Southern Military District’s inner training centers Prudboi, Ashuluk and Kapustin Yar, as well as the ground-based Arzgirsky and Kopanskoy aviation testing sites. About 80 thousand people take part in them, including employees of the Ministry of emergency situations and Rosgvardia, as well as up to 1 thousand military personnel from six foreign countries - Armenia, Belarus, Iran, China, Myanmar and Pakistan. It is planned to involve up to 12.9 thousand military personnel in episodes that fall under the Vienna document of 2011 on confidence-and security-building measures.
