Russian ground forces have created a system for searching for suicide belts in the crowd based on the experience of Syria

26 August 2020

Military personnel of the 5th scientific company of the Russian ground forces, based on the analysis of the Syrian experience, developed a complex for detecting so-called suicide belts in places of mass congestion. The development is presented at the stand of the military technopolis "Era" at the forum "Army-2020".

The product consists of a set of sensors, software and a mobile operator console. It allows to detect suicide belts and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) filled with striking elements on a large area - in places where mass events are held, crowds of people, at checkpoints, and transport infrastructure.

"If there is a suicide bomber in the crowd, the complex will detect it due to the unique radio frequency signatures inherent only in products such as the "Shahid belt" or improvised explosive devices. Information about the location of the object, the distance to it from the nearest sensor and, in case of movement, the movement will be sent to the operator on the remote, after which he will be able to signal the danger and give the command to neutralize the threat," said the representative of the 5th scientific company and one of the developers of the system.

As the source explained, the development was prompted by the experience of Syria. "The work began about three years ago, when our military discovered and seized many different belts and IEDs during operations to remove militants, return refugees and clear mines," the developer said.

The seized belts and IEDs were studied, catalogued, and their unique features were identified. "For example, our complex will not confuse a terrorist in a crowd with a person who comes from the construction market with a package of nuts in a bag," the representative of the scientific company said.

He said that the complex is now completing tests and is being prepared for delivery to one of the law enforcement agencies.

The international military-technical forum "Army-2020 "opened on the territory of the Congress and exhibition center of the Russian Armed forces "Patriot" on August 23 and will last until August 29. Some of the demonstrations are also held at the Alabino test site, Kubinka airfield, and Ashuluk test site in the Astrakhan region. Representatives of about 100 countries are planning to visit the forum. More than one and a half thousand organizations and enterprises will demonstrate about 28 thousand exhibits. Almost 700 units of modern weapons and military equipment take part in static and dynamic displays.
