The FSB neutralized two members of a cell of the Katiba Tauhid al-Jihad international terrorist organization (banned in Russia) who were planning terrorist attacks in Volgograd, the Russian FSB Public Relations Center (PRC) told TASS.
The CBR noted that the terrorists' activities were coordinated from Syrian territory. The guerrillas planned attacks on "government buildings, military residences and explosive fire hazardous facilities. "During the detention, the ringleader and his accomplice, who tried to extract terror funds from a pre-equipped cache in Volgograd, put up armed resistance to the FSB of Russia, and as a result, were neutralized," the CBR noted.
The FSB noted that the members of the terrorist cell were from one of the countries in the Central Asian region. At the scene, as well as in the apartments where radical Islamists lived, the investigators found firearms, ammunition, chemical components and striking elements for IEDs and religious literature. In addition, they managed to find a map of Volgograd with the planned places of terrorist attacks marked on it. In particular, the militants planned a terrorist attack near the Motherland monument, which is circled in black on the map. This follows from a video distributed by the FSB.
"At the same time, other participants in the inter-regional cell were detained in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ufa, Maikop and Volgograd, and procedural decisions are being made against them," the PRC stressed.
The complex of urgent investigative actions and operatively-search actions is being continued.
