Putin congratulated Lukashenko on his re-election as President

Vladimir Putin congratulated Alexander Lukashenko on winning the Belarusian presidential election, the Kremlin press service reports.


It is noted that the Russian leader sent a corresponding congratulatory telegram to Lukashenko.


“I hope that your governance will facilitate further development of mutually beneficial Russian-Belarusian relations in all areas, closer cooperation within the Union State, extensive integration within the Eurasian Economic Union and the CIS, and military and political links within the Collective Security Treaty Organisation.  Without doubt, these efforts serve the core interests of the brotherly nations of Russia and Belarus,” the President stressed in his message.

 


Elections in Belarus were held on August 9. After the closure of polling stations in Minsk and other cities, riots lasted until the morning. Dissatisfied with the organization and results of the vote, citizens took to the streets, and security forces used stun grenades and tear gas to disperse the crowd.


According to preliminary data from the CEC, the current head of state, Lukashenko, receives 80.23% of the vote. The second result with a large margin got Svetlana Tikhanovskaya - 9.9%.


At the same time, the headquarters of Tikhanovskaya told RIA Novosti that they do not recognize the official results, noting that data from polling stations in all regions of the Republic show that she scored 70-80%.


6.02% of the electorate voted against all of them. The turnout in the election was 84.23%.
