Putin instructs on mass vaccination of Russians against coronavirus

13 January 2021

Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with the Cabinet of Ministers that from next week it is necessary to start mass vaccination of Russians against the coronavirus.

"I ask <...> to prepare the appropriate infrastructure, thank God, our vaccine does not require any unusual conditions for transportation, like minus fifty, minus seventy, everything is much easier and more effective <...>. It is necessary to build a schedule <...>, as we do for other diseases, for example, for influenza," said the head of state.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said that the authorities are ready to proceed to a more extensive vaccination schedule as of Monday, but that additional consultations with the regions will be needed.

"By the end of January <...> there will be 2.1 million doses of vaccine, and we will have to increase the vaccination campaign quite seriously," she stressed.

Vaccination against the coronavirus began in Russia in early December. The first to be vaccinated were citizens of the main risk groups: doctors, teachers and social workers. Then they were joined by the employees of MFCs, cultural institutions, trade and services, transport and energy companies, industry and mass media, construction workers, volunteers, students, banking and financial sector employees, public authorities and government agencies.

Now it is possible to be vaccinated by Sputnik V created by the Gamaleya center together with the RDIF on the basis of a well-studied platform of a vector of human adenovirus. In the near future, EpiVakKorona, developed by the Novosibirsk Vector Center, will also become available.

People over 18 years old can get vaccinated if they have no chronic diseases from the list of contraindications and if they have not had an acute respiratory infectious disease in the past 30 days. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are contraindicated.
