Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a trip to Engels, visited the site of Yuri Gagarin's landing and laid flowers at a monument to the Soviet cosmonaut installed there. The footage was shown Monday on the Rossiya-24 television channel.
The President is accompanied on the trip by State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, Saratov Region Governor Valery Radaev and the world's first female cosmonaut, State Duma Deputy Valentina Tereshkova.
It is planned that during his working trip to Engels the head of the state will hold a meeting on the development of the space industry via videoconference. In addition, he will hold a meeting with the head of the region.
The park of space conquerors, which opened to the public over the weekend, is located on the site of Gagarin's landing. In 1965, there was installed an obelisk representing a rocket taking off with a height of just under 30 meters. A sculpture of the first cosmonaut was installed at the foot of the obelisk. Now, trees have been planted at the landing site, roads have been renewed, lighting has been made, and a bicycle path has been laid.
