Head of Dagestan Urges Unity in the Fight Against Terrorism

03 September

The Head of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, emphasized that crimes against peace and security, which have plagued the republic repeatedly over the past decades, can neither be justified nor forgiven. On the Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism, he called on the people not to forget the lessons of the past, to preserve unity, and to uphold traditional values.

"Over the past decades, Dagestan has faced numerous acts of terrorist aggression. These acts have brought pain and suffering to thousands of people. Today, as our multinational nation confronts new challenges and threats, it is especially crucial to remain resolute and defeat terrorism. Crimes against the peace and security of our compatriots cannot be justified and will never be forgiven," Melikov stated on his Telegram channel.

He reminded the public of the terrorist attack in Buynaksk on September 4, 1999, a particularly tragic event for the region. The explosion of a residential building resulted in the deaths of more than 60 people, including children, and left around 150 residents injured.

"The tragedy marked the beginning of a series of brutal attacks that shook our country. We must not forget the lessons of the past. Only by standing united, and relying on our traditional values of creation, love for the homeland, inter-ethnic harmony, inter-confessional peace, and good neighborliness, can we protect our homeland, address social problems, and ensure the economic development of the Republic of Dagestan and all of Russia," Melikov added.

Since 2005, the Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism has been observed in the Russian Federation on September 3. This commemorative date was established in remembrance of the tragic events in Beslan on September 1-3, 2004, when 334 people, mostly women and children, were killed during a terrorist siege of a school.
