Foreign Ministry called Ukraine's attempts to return Crimea illegitimate

15 March 2021

Any attempts by Kiev to return Crimea to Ukraine will be perceived as aggression against Russia, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"Once again we remind you that we will consider the participation of any countries and organizations in such actions, including the 'Crimea Platform' initiative, as an unfriendly step against Russia, as a direct encroachment on its territorial integrity," Zakharova said in a comment on the Foreign Ministry's website.

She noted that the seventh anniversary of the reunification of Crimea with Russia does not give rest to Ukrainian figures. Zakharova also commented on the statement of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba about the "three pillars" on which the policy of "return" of the peninsula will be based.

"We are talking about the new strategy of "de-occupation" adopted by the National Security and Defense Council, the initiative "Crimean platform" and "the restoration of international law." "It's safe to say that you won't be able to stand on such shaky 'pillars' for long," she said.

According to her, no "strategies" to work covertly against Crimean residents, including sanctions and a water blockade, can regain their trust. She also called the "Crimea Platform" a forum for discussing the phantom pains of the Ukrainian authorities.

The foreign ministry spokesperson also accused Kiev of violations of international law that go unpunished thanks to the Western patrons of the Ukrainian leadership.

"Their policy of total forced Ukrainianization, promotion of neo-Nazism, violation of the linguistic, cultural and educational rights of national minorities and Russian-speaking citizens, the fight against dissent, the propaganda of Russophobia, the cleansing of the information space - all these further distances not only Russian Crimea but also the regions and citizens of Ukraine itself from Kiev," she stressed.

Zakharova called on Ukraine and other states that support such initiatives to respect the choice of the Crimeans and the territorial integrity of Russia.

Crimea's reunification with Russia

Crimea held a referendum in March 2014, as a result of which the peninsula returned to Russia.

Ukraine, EU countries and the US refused to recognize the results of the vote, calling it an annexation.

Official Moscow rejects these accusations and insists that the annexation procedure was in full compliance with international law.
